Active Reading: Literacy Narrative

This is an annotation of  a transcript of Carol Dweck’s Ted Talk on “The Power of Yet”. In this annotation the method I used consisted of high lighting and jotting down notes and paraphrasing. I find that this technique is effective when I need to recall what I read, and it works well for transcripts.

This is an annotation of David L. Kirp’s “Conquering the Freshman Fear of Failure”. For this annotation I underlined important information and color coded it for different connections. I used blue to represent text-to-self connections; I used pink to represent text-to-text connections, specifically to Dweck’s Ted Talk; lastly I used green to represent important information throughout the piece. This method is very effective because I can find specific things faster and I already have different kinds of connections ready for when I need them.

Literacy Narrative:

As I prepared to write my literacy narrative I did a lot of annotations of sources. The sources included: many articles, short stories, a podcast, and even a TED Talk. Each of these required different methods of annotating. The articles and short stories were pretty much the same; I would highlight and underline the important ideas and then make notes and connections. The podcast and TED Talk were different though because you listen to them first and then takes notes either using the transcript or just by listening. I found it a lot easier to annotate the articles and short stories rather than the podcast and TED Talk because I personally found that reading it myself rather than listening to it made it easier to understand. My skills of annotating have improved a lot through these various sources. I was able to try new techniques and decide what worked best for me and what didn’t.
